It is the heating element that vaporises your e-liquid, the part that most directly determines the flavour you taste and the vapour you produce, and — because it wears out and needs regular replacement — the consumable that most vapers buy most frequently. Understanding coils is therefore not optional knowledge: it is the foundation of getting the best possible experience from your device and avoiding the most common problems that drive people away from vaping.

Despite their importance, coils are often poorly understood, even by people who have been vaping for years. The terminology — resistance, sub-ohm, mesh, round wire, notch coil — sounds technical, and many vapers operate on a trial-and-error basis without a clear sense of why one coil produces better results than another. This guide provides a clear, practical explanation of the main coil types, how resistance affects your experience, and how to know when replacement is overdue.

How a Coil Works

A coil, in the vaping context, is a length of resistance wire wound into a spiral (or formed into a mesh sheet, in modern designs) and wrapped with cotton wicking material. The cotton absorbs e-liquid from the tank or pod and holds it in contact with the wire. When the battery fires, electrical current passes through the wire, generating heat through electrical resistance. This heat vaporises the e-liquid saturating the cotton, producing the vapour that you inhale.

The simplicity of this mechanism belies the engineering sophistication that goes into optimising it. Wire composition, winding geometry, cotton type, wicking channel design, and the dimensional relationship between the coil and the airflow path all affect the flavour, vapour output, and longevity of the coil. The difference in experience between a well-designed coil and a poorly designed one — even at the same resistance and wattage — can be substantial.

Standard Round Wire Coils

Round wire coils — sometimes called traditional or kanthal coils, after the resistance wire alloy commonly used — are the original coil design and remain widely used in many devices. They consist of a single strand or multiple strands of resistance wire wound in a tight spiral. Standard round wire coils have well-understood performance characteristics: they heat up relatively slowly, have a somewhat gradual ramp-up time, and produce a warm, direct flavour.

For MTL vaping, round wire coils at 1.0 ohm or above remain perfectly adequate and are available in a wide range of devices. Many experienced MTL vapers prefer them specifically for their flavour characteristics — the slower heat-up produces what some describe as a more rounded, less sharp vapour compared to mesh. Their weakness is that the heating surface area is relatively small compared to a mesh coil, which means slightly less vapour production and slightly less uniform heating of the cotton.

Mesh Coils – Why They Became the Standard

Mesh coils replaced round wire as the dominant design across most of the vaping market over the past five years, and the reason is straightforward: they produce better results in almost every measurable dimension at sub-ohm wattages. Instead of a wire wound in a spiral, a mesh coil uses a flat sheet of resistance material with a fine perforated pattern — like a tiny window screen — that is rolled into a cylinder. The perforations give the mesh an enormous surface area relative to its mass, resulting in fast ramp-up time, highly uniform heating, and flavour production that is consistently superior to round wire at equivalent wattages.

The flavour improvement from mesh is particularly noticeable in complex, layered e-liquids — the same liquid that tastes good in a round wire coil will typically taste noticeably better in a quality mesh coil, with more distinct top notes and a cleaner finish. For sub-ohm vapers, mesh coils are now effectively the standard, and the majority of coil heads sold for modern open tank systems use mesh construction.

Understanding Resistance and Ohms

Resistance, measured in ohms, determines how the coil interacts with your battery and how much power it draws. High-resistance coils — 1.0 ohm and above — draw less current, heat up to a lower maximum temperature, and produce less vapour. They are used at low wattages (typically 8W to 15W) and are the correct pairing for higher-nicotine e-liquids and MTL devices.

Sub-ohm coils — below 1.0 ohm — draw more current, heat up rapidly to higher temperatures, and produce substantially more vapour. They are used at higher wattages (25W to 80W or more) and require lower-nicotine e-liquids to avoid an uncomfortably high nicotine dose per draw. Common sub-ohm resistances include 0.15 ohm, 0.2 ohm, 0.3 ohm, and 0.5 ohm, each with slightly different performance characteristics.

Your device will specify a recommended wattage range for each coil, and staying within this range is important for both performance and longevity. Running a coil significantly above its recommended wattage burns the cotton, produces an acrid taste, and shortens coil life dramatically.

When to Replace Your Coil

Coil lifespan varies considerably depending on the device, the wattage used, the e-liquid (particularly its sweetener content — sweetened liquids caramelise on the coil and shorten life significantly), and how frequently you vape. As a rough guide, most coils last between one and three weeks of regular use.

The clearest signal that a coil needs replacement is a burnt or unpleasant taste that was not present before. This indicates that the cotton has been damaged — either through dry firing (the coil firing without sufficient liquid), running at too high a wattage, or simply reaching the end of its serviceable life as carbon deposits accumulate on the heating surface. Once a coil tastes burnt, it cannot be restored by re-priming or soaking — it needs to be replaced.

Other indicators of a coil approaching the end of its life include reduced vapour production at the same settings, a slightly muted or flattened flavour profile, and gurgling or spitting (which can indicate that the cotton is no longer wicking efficiently). If you notice any of these symptoms, it is worth installing a fresh coil before the taste deteriorates to the burnt stage.

Priming a New Coil Correctly

Coil priming — the process of saturating the fresh cotton before the first use — is one of the most important habits to develop and one that many beginners skip, often with poor results. A new, dry coil fired immediately can result in a dry hit that damages or destroys the cotton before the liquid has had a chance to saturate it.

To prime correctly: place a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the cotton wicking ports visible on the side of the coil head. Install the coil in your device and fill your tank. Let the device sit for five minutes before vaping. When you first start using the new coil, take a few shorter, lower-power draws before returning to your normal settings. This allows any remaining dry spots in the cotton to become fully saturated under use conditions before they are subjected to full power.

For devices with fixed wattage — pod systems, most beginner kits — simply priming and waiting is sufficient. For variable wattage devices, consider starting at the lower end of the recommended range for the first few draws before moving to your preferred setting.
